Fall Family Fun

Fall Family Fun

by The Reverend Beth Anne Nelson on October 06, 2021

Pumpkin Pie (adapted from Son Shine Kitchen)
Ingredients
1 pie crust (I used gluten free from Whole Foods)
2 cups pureed pumpkin (I like to use fresh)
2-4 TBL Arrowroot powder (this is a substitute for eggs and is a thickening agent)
1 TBL pumpkin pie Spice
¼ tsp salt
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
On the stove top, combine the pumpkin pie spice, arrowroot powder, and begin to look like pudding. Pour the pumpkin pie filling into the crust.
Put into prepared pie crust and bake at 400 for 40-60 minutes.
Allow to cool.
Enjoy!

Fall has begun and with it the fall activity lists. Now, in Texas, we don’t quite have the radiant color changes of the northern States; however that does not mean we cannot have some fun! I wanted to share about what our family has been doing for fall.

This week, my girls are on fall break. I also have Curate Cohort, a time at Camp Allen for Curates to learn together about how to be a priest. This meant that my girls and I had to stay in the Houston area.

Still, the four of us have been having fun together, even though we have not officially gone on vacation anywhere. The theme for the week has been weather and season changes. My nine year old has been researching the weather quite a bit. Our math has been weather themed.  Her vocabulary has been weather themed. Our three year old has been learning about weather changes, too, but with less interest.

We began the week with the Pet Blessing (the girls loved having their stuffed animals blessed). Each day, I ask the girls to observe the weather and season changes on walks and activities. We have taken a trip to the “big” park (it is called Atascocita Park), played on the playground at church, and our week will end with a big movie night where we cook the meal together.

When we have a movie night, we try to pick foods that accompany the movie well in terms of theme. Sometimes, Pinterest is a help. So, in this blog, I thought I would share ourrecent movie night plans with all of you. Friday night, after I return from Camp Allen, we will be watching Spooky the Square Pumpkin (it is on Netflix). This is a sweet story about being different and is Halloween/fall themed.

We typically have an activity for movie night, and this week is no different, we will be painting a pumpkin. I prefer using the Crayola Washable Paint with small children. We keep our pumpkins under the porch awning, so this works well for us.

Our food for the night will be Pumpkin pie (yum),) and a “garden” (this will be a salad bar with foods such as pumpkin seeds, pepitas, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, and other seasonal vegetables). We will drink warm apple cider with cinnamon sticks.

After the movie, we will all cuddle together and read a fun book about seasons called Look Out My Window by H.J. Ralles. I have read several books on weather and seasons, this is my favorite because it includes observation on the weather from a child as he wears different outfits. It was written by one of the parishioners at Christ the King, and I had no idea how helpful it would be in explaining seasons to a child who has a shorter attention span.

My prayer for you is that your days are equally full of fall fun!

For His Sake,

Beth Anne
