Passage: Luke 18:9

Jesus told the parable in today’s gospel to the Pharisees, “to some who trusted in themselves.” The story he told them was about two men who went to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee’s prayer is so full of self-congratulation while the tax collector was so concerned with his own sin that all he could ask was for God’s mercy. Jesus said that the tax collector was justified through his prayer of humility because it brought him into relationship with God. For the first man, he was deprived of that relationship because of his conceit. As we are living our life in community, especially as we have witnessed it this weekend through our experiences of The Street of Shoppes, may we pray always for one another and for our community with great humility in seeking God’s mercy.
