PARKING FOR GUESTS:   The event is located in the back parking lot and field behind the church.  There is plenty of parking in the parking lot on the northside of the church off of Stuebner Airline & Cashel Drive (near Heiden Feed Store).  Additionally there is a smaller parking lot off of Stuebner Airline (near the lighting store).  Parking Attendants will be available as well to help direct you safely.  

RESTROOMS: Located inside the Bentley Education Building.  Enter through the walkway doors between the two playgrounds. These doors will be the only doors unlocked. 

FIRST AID:  A First Aid station will be located near the porte-cochere (covered driveway) by the northside of the Bentley Education Building.  You can also come to the Information/Welcome Desk for any assistance.

Prayer Booth for those seeking confidential prayer 

Voting: Guests rotate through several tents to sample bites of BBQ. (Similar to a chili cookoff.) Guests vote for their favorite food by placing their ticket(s) in the team’s bucket. There will also be Official judges, who receive extra tickets (so their votes count a little more).

UPDATE: 4.29.2022 - Email from Mtr. Beth Anne:

Final email for Holy Smokes tomorrow.  Pease plan on being there by 9:00 to start setting up.  Also, there is a Safety Meeting with Arden Renze at 9:30.  

We are almost at event time, yay!! A few notes about tomorrow:

If you are volunteering, Thank you!!! Your volunteer position may have changed. This is our first time with this event and we are still learning. When you arrive, please check-in at the welcome table ten minutes before the event begins. We will answer any questions you may have about the day.

  1. Set-up begins tomorrow (Saturday, 4/30) at 5:30 a.m., we will set-up tents, etc. 
  2. For cook teams, you will need a trash bag to throw away trash for your team. Other trash cans are spread throughout the event site. 
  3. If you are getting a table for a booth, please get a six foot table (closer to the doors). Eight food tables are reserved for another purpose. 
  4. The weather for the event is warm (73-88 degrees)! Please wear sunscreen and drink a lot of water. 
  5. Please stop cooking at 2 p.m. and begin to “cool down” your station. The judges will taste the food at 2 p.m. The event lasts until 3 p.m. Some clean-up can occur between 2-3. 
  6. Awards will be given at 2:30 p.m. 
  7. Clean-up is from 3-4 p.m. Please wipe down your table and clean-up your area.  
  8. Thank you for all that you are doing! This is going to be a fun event.

Dear Teams and Volunteers,

Thank you for participating in Holy Smokes.  A few notes about our upcoming event:

  1. For Volunteers, please check-in at the welcome table about ten minutes before your volunteer shift begins. We will have a list of volunteers and duties. You are welcome to sample the food/participate in activities throughout the event. Thank you again for your time!
  2. If the Health Department arrives, please find Mtr. Beth Anne or Kayle so that we can answer any questions that they have regarding the event.
  3. If the Harris County Fire Marshall or Constable arrives, please find Mtr. Beth Anne, Kayle, or Arden, so that we can address any concerns regarding the event. 
  4. Each team that requested a table will receive a 6 ft table from the church. Please cover any table from the church with a tablecloth. We have a roll available, however, we ask you do the covering yourself.
  5. There is NO ELECTRICTY available for any booth.
  6. If you are cooking/staying overnight,  please be aware of your surroundings.
  7. If you have any questions, please go to the website.
  8. We will have a hose for water, please bring a bucket.

Again, this is going to be a great event and we are grateful to all of you!  We hope you have a great time!

UPDATE:  4.21.2022 - All food must be cooked onsite.

VOLUNTEER ON A Cook-Off TEAM: Each tent consists of a team of people. Each team must pay for/provide the following: own food, way to prepare food, cooking supplies, utensils, and equipment, pop-up tent, chairs, tables, prep area, etc., and first aid kit. Decorations and yard games (optional)  If you need electricity, you will need to bring a generator there are no electrical outlets available.  

The categories for cooking: chicken, beef, pork, and other (any grilled item/food - does not have to be smoked).   Each team is encouraged to provide 150 samples (bite size) of per entry. ALL FOOD MUST BE COOKED ON-SITE.

Parking for Volunteers:  The lighting store next to the church has given us permission to park in their lot during this event.  We will be using the back parking lot to cook and serve.  Please consider freeing up space for our guests by parking by the lighting store and walking over if you are physically able to.  There will be designated loading and unloading areas.  

Set Up: BBQ Teams can set up as early as 5:30am (ready to serve by 11:30am)

9:00am  - Roll Call: all Teams must be present and set up 
9:30am - Safety Meeting led by Arden Renze, Jr. Warden
2:00pm - Judging ends from all guests and official judges
2:30pm - Recognition/Awards will be announced

Volunteers need for  Set Up, Clean Up, Building Monitors, Parking Lot Monitor, and First Aid Tent (prefer medical or CPR certified).
